MaxiTrack Temporary Roadway Mats to Maintain Access Across Parkland

On the south coast of England, a major construction project required the temporary closure of a key roadway within a popular public park. The route was used daily by more than 150 cars, as well as buses, cyclists, and pedestrians. To keep the park accessible during the four-week works, traffic needed to be rerouted across nearby parkland - without damaging the grass or creating safety risks for the public.

The Challenge: Rerouting Mixed Traffic Across Soft Grass With Remediation Risk

With the primary roadway closed, the only viable diversion ran over soft, grassy terrain not designed for vehicle loading. Repeated movements from cars and buses risked rutting, mud build-up, and long-term damage that could lead to significant reinstatement costs.

The access solution also needed to maintain safe, stable routes for cyclists and pedestrians, and be installed quickly to minimise disruption to the park and its users.

Our Solution: MaxiTrack Mats Installed as a Temporary Road Over Soft Ground

GroundGuards recommended MaxiTrack heavy-duty trackway mats for the four-week diversion. MaxiTrack is designed for rapid deployment and is well suited to temporary roads over grass and soft ground.

Fast Manual Installation With High Traction Underfoot

Each mat weighs 40kg, allowing quick manual installation and repositioning where needed. The SmartGrip tread provided reliable traction for vehicles and pedestrians, helping maintain safe movement in changing weather.

Locked Joints to Suppress Mud and Prevent Rutting

Overlapping flange joints created seamless coverage and helped lock the mats tightly together. This formed a stable, professional-looking trackway that reduced mud migration and protected the turf from rutting under frequent traffic.

Results: 150m Diversion Road Delivered With No Grass Damage

GroundGuards delivered and installed a 150-metre-long, 3.6-metre-wide temporary roadway within a short timeframe. This kept the park open throughout the works, with visitors able to navigate safely around the construction zone.

Once the project was complete and the mats were removed, the parkland underneath was fully protected and no remedial works were required. The client was pleased with the result, and the local community maintained access to the park with minimal disruption.

Key Lessons for Temporary Traffic Diversions Across Parks and Soft Ground

  • When existing roads must close, a protected diversion route can keep public access open while avoiding long-term ground damage.
  • Specify mats with secure joints and full surface coverage to reduce rutting and mud movement under mixed traffic.
  • Traction matters for all users - choose tread patterns that support vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians in wet conditions.
  • Fast manual installation helps deliver diversions quickly and reduces disruption in public spaces.
  • Protecting parkland during temporary access can eliminate reinstatement cost and preserve community goodwill.
