Sutton Road Cemetery in Southend-on-Sea is known for its well-kept grounds and peaceful setting. However, like many cemeteries, the site presents a challenge during wet weather. Saturated ground conditions near burial plots made it difficult for mourners to safely gather at the graveside without slipping or walking through mud and puddles.
The Parks and Bereavement Services team at Southend Borough Council identified a need to improve underfoot safety across the site. For Assistant Operations Manager Kevin Watkins, it was about creating a more respectful and secure environment for families during a sensitive time.
