Forestry Trackway for Geotechnical Investigation in Cheshire

A geotechnical investigation in the woodlands of Cheshire needed reliable vehicle access across 1.4km of undulating, sensitive forest floor. The programme ran for 12 weeks and involved repeated movements from dumper trucks, drilling rigs, and light commercial vehicles. The priority was to create a safe, continuous route while keeping ground impact to an absolute minimum.

The Challenge: Temporary Vehicle Access Across Sensitive Woodland Ground

The access route crossed soft, environmentally sensitive terrain where rutting, compaction, and surface disturbance were genuine risks. The ground conditions varied along the 1.4km length, with tighter curves and narrower sections that would be difficult to manage with a single mat type.

The client also needed an efficient installation method that avoided bringing in mechanical lifting equipment, helping to reduce disruption within the woodland setting.

Our Solution: Hybrid Trackway Using MaxiTrack and MultiTrack Mats

GroundGuards proposed a hybrid trackway using MaxiTrack heavy-duty trackway mats alongside MultiTrack ground protection mats. Using both systems provided the flexibility to match the mat to the terrain, while maintaining a consistent running surface for mixed site traffic.

MaxiTrack for Strength and Traction on Heavy-Use Sections

MaxiTrack was used where maximum strength and traction were required, supported by its overlapping flanges and SmartGrip tread.

MultiTrack for Curves and Narrower Woodland Routes

MultiTrack supplemented the route with slightly smaller panels, better suited to tighter curves and narrower stretches without compromising stability.

Fast Installation Without Mechanical Lifting

Both mat types are designed for lightweight, manual handling, removing the need for mechanical lifting. In total, more than 1,600 mats were installed across the full 1.4km length, laid with staggered joints to maximise strength and reduce movement under load.

Results: Stable Access Route Delivered Ahead of Schedule

The completed roadway provided smooth, dependable access for all vehicle types throughout the works, with no disruption to the ground beneath. The route was installed quickly, with minimal fuss, and delivered ahead of schedule.

The client specifically noted the tidy finish and rapid turnaround, recognising the trackway as a practical, professional answer to what could have been a complex logistical challenge in a sensitive woodland environment.

Key Lessons for Temporary Trackway on Rural and Forestry Sites

  • Use a hybrid mat approach where terrain varies, rather than forcing one system to fit every section of a route.
  • Prioritise mat designs that balance traction with ground sensitivity on soft, organic forest floors.
  • Plan for curves and pinch points early - smaller-format panels can simplify alignment and reduce installation time.
  • Staggered joint layouts improve trackway stability and help spread loads more evenly on softer ground.
  • If minimising disturbance is critical, lightweight mats that can be installed by hand can reduce plant movements and site impact.
