For a busy event at York Racecourse, GroundGuards supplied a practical temporary access solution to support taxi drop-off, pick-up and waiting arrangements across a grassed area.
Using UltraTrack Pro and FastCover mats, the team created a more stable surface for both vehicles and pedestrians, helping the event site work safely and efficiently on the day without leaving the ground in a mess afterwards.
Project overview
The project involved creating a temporary taxi drop-off, pick-up and waiting area over grass at York Racecourse.
The area needed to support vehicle movement, pedestrian use and event-day traffic flow, while also helping to protect the grass beneath. For venues and events, this balance is important. The access route has to perform during the event, but the site also needs to recover cleanly once the temporary infrastructure is removed.

The site challenge
Large events place extra pressure on access routes, arrival points and transport areas. Taxi drop-off and pick-up zones can see repeated vehicle movements, periods of waiting traffic and a steady flow of pedestrians moving between vehicles and the venue.
On grass, that can quickly become a problem. Without suitable temporary access, vehicle tyres and pedestrian footfall can cause rutting, churned-up ground, slippery areas and operational disruption.
At York Racecourse, the requirement was straightforward but important: create a temporary surface that would help taxis and pedestrians use the area more safely and reliably during the event, while reducing the risk of damage to the grass.

The GroundGuards solution
GroundGuards supplied and installed a combination of UltraTrack Pro and FastCover mats to form the temporary taxi access and waiting area.
UltraTrack Pro was used to support vehicle movement across the grass, providing a stable temporary roadway surface for taxis using the drop-off and pick-up zone. FastCover mats were used to support pedestrian movement and surface protection where a lighter-duty ground covering was suitable.
Together, the products helped create a practical temporary access arrangement that suited the mixed-use nature of the area. Vehicles had a defined, more stable route to use, while pedestrians had a cleaner and more secure surface underfoot.

Products used
UltraTrack Pro
UltraTrack Pro was used for temporary vehicle access over grass, helping taxis move across the area with greater stability and less direct impact on the ground.
FastCover
FastCover mats were used to support pedestrian movement and general surface protection around the temporary taxi waiting and access area.
Outcome and practical impact
The completed installation gave York Racecourse a temporary taxi area that could support the demands of a busy event without relying on unprotected grass.
For the venue and event team, the value was practical. The access solution helped manage transport flow, improved the usability of the taxi area, and reduced the risk of the grass being left damaged after the event.
This is the kind of project where the best result is often simple: the site works properly when it needs to, visitors and vehicles can move more confidently, and the ground is protected once the event is over.
