When access is tight, temporary road installations sometimes need a practical rethink on site.

For this UltraTrack hire project in Kendal, Cumbria, the original access point proved too restricted for machinery to pass through the property. Rather than delay the installation, the GroundGuards team adapted the approach, working with the available site conditions to create a safe and practical access route.

Project overview

GroundGuards supplied UltraTrack on hire to support agricultural access in Cumbria.

The temporary road was needed to provide a workable route across the site, but the installation was complicated by a restricted entrance. Machinery could not pass through the original access point, so the team needed to find another way to complete the route without causing unnecessary disruption.

The site challenge

The main challenge was access width.

The intended route began through a property, but the access point was too tight for the machinery needed to complete the installation. This meant a standard installation sequence was not possible.

The project still needed:

  • A practical temporary road for agricultural access
  • A safe way to position and install the UltraTrack mats
  • A method that worked around the restricted property access
  • An approach that helped minimise disruption on site

The GroundGuards solution

The team adapted quickly and changed the installation sequence.

Instead of bringing the machinery through the original access point, the UltraTrack mats were lifted over a wall. Machinery then accessed the route from the opposite side, travelling through the fields to carry out the installation.

In effect, the temporary road was built in reverse.

This allowed the team to work around the restricted access point while still delivering the route needed for the agricultural works.

Products and services used

  • Product used: UltraTrack
  • Service type: Hire
  • Application: Agricultural access and temporary road installation
  • Location: Kendal, Cumbria

UltraTrack was selected to support a temporary access route where machinery and site movement needed to be managed across agricultural ground.

Outcome and practical impact

By changing the installation approach, GroundGuards was able to complete the UltraTrack hire installation despite the restricted access.

The project shows the importance of practical planning and on-site flexibility when delivering temporary roads in agricultural settings. Not every site allows a straightforward installation, especially where existing property access, field boundaries, walls, or narrow entrances affect how equipment can be moved.

For this Cumbria project, adapting the sequence meant the team could provide a workable access solution while helping to minimise disruption.
