Event Ground Protection and Safe Access for Bowling Park, Bradford
As part of Bradford City of Culture 2025, event organisers needed to prepare Bowling Park for performances and public gatherings. The site required temporary staging, clear pedestrian walkways, and vehicle access routes, while keeping the park’s grass and public areas protected. With high footfall expected and limited setup time, the priority was a fast, practical solution that supported safe movement without damaging the green space.
The Challenge: Temporary Staging, Walkways, and Vehicle Access on Grass
The event build had to balance public safety with the need to preserve the park surface. High pedestrian volumes increase the risk of worn grass, trip hazards, and muddy routes if the weather turns.
At the same time, the organisers needed stable areas for staging and safe access for light vehicles, all within a tight installation window and without disrupting the park’s long-term condition.

Our Solution: 313 FastCover Mats Installed for Staging and Walkway Areas
GroundGuards supplied and installed 313 FastCover ground protection mats to meet the event requirements. At 32mm thick, FastCover provided heavy-duty coverage while remaining quick to deploy and easy to reposition where layouts needed to change during setup.
Overlapping Edge Design for a Secure, Tidy Layout
The mats’ overlapping edge design enabled a neat, stable installation across the key working areas. Placement was planned around the event infrastructure to support staging zones, define pedestrian routes, and maintain safe access for site operations.
Efficient Installation to Match a Tight Event Programme
Installation was carried out efficiently by the GroundGuards team, with matting laid in line with the planned event footprint. The solid surface helped keep movements smooth during build and live operation, while protecting the ground underneath.

Results: Stable Event Areas and Protected Park Ground
The event ran without issue. Staging areas remained stable, pedestrian routes were clearly defined, and access for light vehicles stayed safe and functional throughout. The park surface was protected, with no damage reported to the grassed areas covered by the mats.
The organisers were pleased with the outcome, and the mats will continue to support further events within Bradford’s City of Culture programme - demonstrating how well-planned ground protection helps public spaces host major celebrations while staying presentable.
Key Lessons for Events in Parks and Public Green Spaces
- Plan matting layouts around staging and pedestrian desire lines to reduce churn and protect grass in the highest footfall zones.
- Use heavy-duty panels where staging and operational activity concentrate, even if the rest of the site is pedestrian-focused.
- Overlapping edge designs help create a more secure, continuous surface and a tidier finish in public-facing areas.
- Choose systems that can be repositioned quickly during setup when infrastructure layouts change.
- Defining walkways early improves crowd flow, reduces slip and trip risks, and limits wider ground disturbance.
